The airport was first developed by the Germans back in 1933. Thanks to its location among forests it was well hidden from any kind of unwanted attention. In the 1950s and 1960s it was redeveloped and assigned a back up landing site used by the 1st Airborne Regiment based in Minsk Mazowiecki. This is when the landing strip was significantlly widened. In the latter part of the 70's the facility added an air traffic control tower and an outbuilding. Between 2007-2013 was allocated to airpor's further development. As of January 21st 2016, the new Airport SZY/ESPY Olsztyn-Masuria was put into service.

The airport is dedicated to service passenger traffic, both domestic and international.
The building was designed to correspond with region`s architecture. Architectural components such as a board walk imitations, are inspired by Masuria` s lakes interwoven with wooden boards and bridges. Entrences and exits take after masurian wooden houses. Tree top formed poles are also visible inside the building.
